How to Volunteer with TBP/ATH

Whether you are affiliated with the University of Georgia or a community member in Athens, anyone can serve and help ease the burden of homelessness. Without the dedication and hardwork from our passionate volunteers, we would not be able to continuously and consistently serve the homeless community.

01 | Mandatory Volunteer Training

Anyone who wishes to volunteer and serve with The Backpack Project of Athens must attend a Volunteer Training once a year. Due to the nature of street outreach, this one hour training session will be a time to learn more about The Backpack Project, homelessness specifically in Athens, volunteer opportunities, education on harm reduction, and protocol’s when in the field.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our chapter at the University of Georgia, fill out the google form below to sign up. Once confirmed, you will be added to both our listserv and our GroupMe.

Every week, we host a number of different volunteer opportunities ranging from tutoring at Athens Area Homeless Shelter to preparing and delivering meals to many of the local encampments. We work hard to ensure that your donation will change the life of a someone facing homelessness. A monetary donation is perhaps the most meaningful type of donation you can make because it creates the most value. Through your donations, we are able to buy all of the 40+ essential items that go in the backpacks wholesale, taking advantage of nonprofit and bulk rates and discounts, so your money will have more purchasing power through us. We promise to stretch your dollar for the highest impact possible.

Nonmonetary donations such as clothing, food items, tents, water, and more are also welcome and always appreciated. Whether you are making a personal donation or a donation in honor or memory of someone, we truly appreciate and value your donations because we know that you are trusting us to provide the best possible service to the homeless. On behalf of the clients and communities we serve, thank you for supporting The Backpack Project.

Saturday Meals
Join us in packing Saturday Meals! Since 2019, TBP/ATH has expanded its goals to meet the immediate needs of our clients through cooking and delivering meals every week. In addition to meals, water, bug spray, women’s menstrual kits, clothing, and other necessities are distributed per the request of our clients.
Street Outreach
Street outreach is fundamental to our connection with our clients. Hand-delivering meals and backpacks containing food, toiletries, and other necessities to those experiencing homelessness is what makes us unique, and has allowed us to connect with our community in a truly special way.
